Steve Spurrier reached a coaching milestone when South Carolina defeated East Carolina 33-23 this past Saturday. That was career win number 200 for him, which puts him behind only Georgia’s Vince Dooley (201) and Alabama’s Bear Bryant (323) in SEC history.

Spurrier is proud to say that 15 of those victories have come against the Bulldogs. He was 11-1 against Georgia while serving as the coach at Florida, his alma mater, and he is a competitive 4-5 since joining the Gamecocks 10 years ago. Georgia still leads the South Carolina series 47-16-2 overall.

“Now it’s pretty even since I’ve been here,” Spurrier said of the UGA series on the SEC coaches teleconference call on Wednesday. “I think they’re up 5-4 on us, so we’ve sort of held our own. But every game’s a different game, every team’s a different team. It’s always fun to see what happens.”

Spurrier somewhat downplayed the success he had against the Bulldogs while at Florida.

“Back in those days we were generally pretty big favorites, to tell you the truth,” he said. “Georgia, they weren’t very good most of the early to mid-90s. In ’97 they beat us pretty good but, other than that, we were pretty much favored every game when we played them. That’s why we won most all of them except for that one, I guess.”

Spurrier was asked what his record was as a player against the Bulldogs.

“When I was quarterbacking I lost two out of three,” he said. Then he paused for a moment. “But we won our freshman year. Put that in there. We were keeping score that freshman game, so tell my buddy Lynn Hughes we kicked their butts my freshman year, OK?”
