Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof and linebackers coach Andy McCollum have switched coaching responsibilities for spring practice. Roof, who has coached the safeties along with overseeing the entire defense, has coached linebackers this spring. McCollum has been coaching safeties. Roof did not give a specific reason for the change.

“Just figured we’d change it up,” Roof said. “Just change it up a little bit.”

McCollum has coached in a variety of roles in his career, but has coached linebackers for a significant portion. He came to Tech as a defensive line coach in 2010, filling that role for 2 ½ years before switching to linebackers. Most of Roof’s career has been spent as a defensive coordinator. Of the four position-coaching jobs he has held, three were with linebackers. He has had responsibility of the safeties since his arrival at Tech in 2013.

Roof was noncommittal on whether the change will remain past the spring.

“We’ll see,” he said. “We have a lot of things that we’ve got to get done in the next couple months. It’s not a big deal. It’s just something (that) we want to give it a whirl and it’s been fun.”
