Mills, Marshall continue duel for starting B-back job

The starting B-back job for Georgia Tech’s game is undecided between Marcus Marshall and Dedrick Mills. That’s according to the team’s depth chart, and quarterbacks and B-backs coach Bryan Cook confirmed as much after Tuesday’s practice.

“We’ll go out there (Wednesday) and, based on what we saw out of Saturday and based on what we see out of (Wednesday), make a decision probably heading into Thursday, or maybe even after Thursday’s practice,” Cook said.

After starting the season opener and scoring the game-winning touchdown in the win over Boston College, Mills sat out of the Mercer game this past Saturday for violating a team rule. Cook said that the first-year freshman has responded well to the discipline.

“Dedrick, he’s a hungry kid,” Cook said. “I think he’s anxious to clear that slate and take that next step forward.”

In the starting lineup, Marshall ran 10 times for 51 yards. He scored on a 10-yard run but also ended the game’s opening drive with a fumble. Cook had high hopes for Marshall in the game given his offseason work and physical condition.

“He did O.K.,” Cook said. “I don’t think he played as well as he would have hoped or I would have hoped. So we’ve got some work to get done.”

Cook was disappointed in another B-back who lost the ball on a fumble, Quaide Weimerskirch. Given the ball on the Mercer 2-yard line, on the first carry of his career, Weimerskirch had the ball stripped as he tried to push to the goal line.

“I was kind of blunt with him (Monday),” Cook said. “I told him, ‘This is not Pace High School. These defenders weigh more than 205 pounds. When there’s five of them on you, just get your forward progress and run your feet, and nothing good’s going to happen past that.’”
