Isaiah Williams transferring to Georgia State

A day after losing a point guard, Georgia State picked up one with Isaiah Williams deciding to transfer from Samford.

Williams, a 6-foot-1 native of Buford, averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 assists per game last year in winning the Southern Conference’s freshman of the year. He had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.6.

“I felt like it was the best fit for me,” he said.

Backup point guard Jaylen Hinton decided earlier this week to transfer from Georgia State.

Williams visited Georgia State’s campus on Wednesday and said his decision came down to the Panthers and North Carolina-Wilmington.

He will work out with the Panthers this summer and enroll in the fall. He will sit out a year, per the NCAA’s transfer rules.

Williams said he left Samford because he wanted to play at a higher level and in a better environment. The Bulldogs went 13-20 last year recently hired Scott Padgett as coach.

Williams becomes another in a long line of transfers into coach Ron Hunter’s program. He will join Ryan Harrow (Kentucky), Kevin Ware (Louisville), recently graduated Manny Atkins (Virginia Tech), Jeremy Hollowell (Indiana) and Curtis Washington (USC). With the exception of Hollowell and Washington, each of those players grew up in the metro Atlanta area.

Williams said he is a good shooter, good in transition, and a good man-to-man defender.

Hunter isn’t allowed to talk about Williams until he submits his application for enrollment.

Also, David Travers, a point guard who left the team after his freshman season in 2012-13 but didn’t leave school, is rejoining as a walk-on.
