The court at Georgia State’s basketball and volleyball practice facility will be named the Cathy Henson – Patty Ferrer Court, after they made a gift of at least $100,000, the athletics department announced on Tuesday. The exact amount of the gift wasn’t released by the university.
The practice facility will be located next to the Sports Arena, where the teams play and practice, and is scheduled to open in 2016.
In the days after Georgia State’s run to the third round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, athletic director Charlie Cobb announced that the school would pursue turning the Aquatics Center into a practice space for the three teams.
The squads share the Sports Arena for practices and games, which can make scheduling difficult.
Construction of the practice facility will be done in phases.
The first phase will include filling in the two pools in the Aquatic Center, fixing the HVAC and installing the court, baskets and a scoreboard. It is estimated to cost $900,000.
The second phase will be to add another half-court and possibly other amenities such as offices and renovating the locker room for the sand volleyball team. It is estimated to cost $600,000, depending upon the amenities. Those will be examined when the first phase is complete.
The gift is from Patty Ferrer and her husband, Brad, and Cathy Henson and her husband, Chris Carpenter. The Ferrers are alumni of Georgia State. Cathy Henson earned her juris doctor from Georgia State. She serves on the Georgia State foundation board and the athletic association board.
