The unpredictable adventure that has been the Georgia Tech roster may have witnessed its final episode Thursday, when coach Paul Johnson released star incoming freshman running back Myles Autry from his letter of intent, according to Autry.
Autry sought the release, which he said was given without restrictions, after his brother, Anthony, a wide receiver, was dismissed from the team for a repeat violation of the athletic association student-athlete code of conduct. Myles said he held no ill will for Tech, noting that he chose the school in large part for the opportunity to play with his brother.
“(Johnson) told me, ‘Do whatever is best for you,’” Autry said Thursday evening. “It was nothing but respect for each other.”
Autry said he will either take online courses or enroll at a prep school this fall and then enroll in college in January, while his brother will enroll at Hutchinson (Kan.) Junior College. Autry, who needs approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse, mentioned Georgia, Florida State and Oregon as possible destinations, adding that he and his brother likely will be a package deal. He said there was a 50 percent chance he could end up at Tech without his brother.
Autry’s release may be the final roster move in an offseason that has seen 14 scholarship players with eligibility remaining leave the school or team by transfer, dismissal, medical disqualification and academic ineligibility.
