A Texas man may end up the butt of some jokes in his small town after surviving what he first thought was a gunshot wound to his rear end.

On Thursday, police in Groesbeck, population 4,328, moved to ease concerns about talk of a shooting in a local mobile-home park.

Groesbeck Police Chief Chris Henson posted on the department's Facebook page that officers were called to the scene by a man who said he thought he'd been shot in his left buttock while sitting on a porch.

It wasn't clear what type of dog was the culprit, or whether it was the victim's pooch, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Henson's post generated many humorous comments, lauding the dog for "taking a bite out of crime" and glad police "weeded out" and "got to the bottom" of the issue.
