Reactions have been an overwhelming sense of awe after 21 seconds of footage has been distributed online of the Statue of Liberty being struck by lightning Wednesday.

The striking video was shot during an evening thunderstorm with Lady Liberty, which has towered over New York City since the late 1800s, surrounded by dark, ominous clouds. In a matter of seconds, technicolor lightning slashed through the sky, seemingly hitting the base of the venerable symbol of freedom. The statue, of course, remained standing.

Twitter user Mikey Cee was the fortunate videographer to capture the footage, which now has nearly 3 million views. He captioned the video with “The best video I ever captured.” Several on social media Thursday morning agreed.

The round of treacherous weather swept through the tri-state area most of Wednesday night, PIX 11 reported Thursday. The storms brought whipping winds, flooding, outages and damage in some areas of New York and New Jersey.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Gonzalo is building in the South Atlantic into what could become a hurricane by the time it reaches Florida or the Gulf Coast.
