Vets benefits fair coming to Canton

A major Georgia Department of Veterans Affairs program will land in Canton for the first time next month. The Supermarket of Veterans Benefits is 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Cherokee Conference Center, 1130 Bluffs Parkway.

“Northwest Georgia has a pretty good veterans population. and we’ve not been to Canton before,” said spokesman Jon Suggs. “We do move it around the state every year. It’s a very popular program.”

Suggs says the annual event held since 1966 will bring together representative from roughly 40 federal, state and local government agencies to provide a “one stop shop” for veterans information — everything from how to qualify for a specific benefit to how being a veteran might affect social security payouts.

The Veterans Health Administration will also stage a free health fair, with fee medical screenings and seasonal flu shots.

Suggs says the event typically draws 1,000 or more service veterans.
