I-85 south just above Ga. 400 will shrink to half its normal size this weekend for road work, setting the stage for carmageddon for spring breakers and others traveling south through Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will close three of the expressway’s six southbound lanes during the day and four at night as crews put up signs marking the new junction of 85 and 400. GDOT said the lane closings will start about a half-mile north of Clairmont Road and extend to North Druid Hills Road.

Which means college students heading to Florida may well spend part of their spring break sitting on I-85 north of Atlanta.

GDOT Commissioner Keith Golden acknowledged that the timing was bad for some spring breakers but noted that the work has to get done sometime. He also said that the work will depend on the weather. Normally rain has nasty effects on freeway traffic; on Saturday, rain could mean that all lanes of I-85 stay open.
