As you make a list of things you'll need this Memorial Day weekend, don't forget to put designated driver at the top.
Alcohol and holidays go hand in hand for many people, and too many drivers get behind the wheel when they're intoxicated.
Last year, 17 people died in Georgia traffic accidents during the long Memorial Day weekend.
AAA and Anheuser-Busch want to make sure that doesn't happen this year.
Starting Friday at 6 p.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, you can get a Tow to Go ride at no cost if you're unable to drive, and you don't have to be a AAA member.
“The Tow to Go program is an effective way to promote the use of Designated Drivers and help prevent impaired driving,” said Kathy Casso, vice president of corporate social responsibility for Anheuser-Busch.
By calling 1-855-286-9246 (855 2-TOW-2-GO), drivers in Georgia, Tennessee and Florida can get a ride to a safe location within a 10-mile radius — and get their car towed within that radius.
Some guidelines to remember:
- Tow trucks can take two people home; make other arrangements if your group has more people needing assistance.
- You can't make an appointment for Tow to Go. The service is designed to be used as a last resort, so have a designated driver in place before the fun begins.
- In some cases, such as a high volume of calls, AAA will have to get you a cab or have local law enforcement help you get home.
Georgia traffic deaths are up 25 percent over last year, and AAA is predicting holiday traffic this year will be the heaviest it's been in a decade. By having a designated driver, you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a holiday statistic.
