Q: Were they able to salvage any of that beautiful Georgia marble from the archives building?
—John Glover, McDonough
A: Before the old Georgia Archives building was imploded in early March, the marble on the exterior of the first two floors was pulled off and saved, Paul Melvin, a spokesman for the Georgia Building Authority, told Q&A on the News.
The plan is to reuse the marble on the new judicial complex that will be built on the downtown Atlanta site.
The exterior marble found on floors three through 14 was thinner and had become brittle, he said. As a result, the marble from those levels cannot be used on the new building, but “we’re going to crush it up,” Melvin said. The plan is for the crushed marble to be used as fill material for the property.
“We are pretty much recycling all of that marble,” he said.
It is White Cherokee marble from north Georgia, which also is found on the exterior of the U.S. Capitol.
