Q: Reading the obituary for Eva Galambos, it says that she led the drive for incorporating Sandy Springs in 2005. Didn’t she actively push forward 10 or 15 years before that? She worked pretty hard on that.
—Richard Clark, Atlanta
A: Galambos, the first mayor of Sandy Springs who died April 19, was actively involved in pushing for cityhood as early as 1976, the city states in her obit at sandyspringsga.org. She was "convinced that local control, with a city of our own, was the only answer for Sandy Springs," the website states. Galambos helped build an active community network and "served as a mentor and leader for other women in Sandy Springs." She was elected mayor after the city was incorporated in 2005 and served until 2013. "Eva was truly our city mother," Mayor Rusty Paul said in the obit.
Q: Can you provide an update on the Marine who was accidentally shot at Kings Bay?
—Paul Bailey, Redan
A: Lance Cpl. Dan Cary, 19, returned to his family's home in Cape Ann, Mass., on April 10 to continue to recover from being accidentally shot during a security drill at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. A fellow Marine was handing his M16 to another Marine on March 24 when the weapon discharged, hitting Cary in the back. The bullet passed through him and caused injuries to his intestines and spleen before exiting his abdomen, according to published reports. "It feels great to be home — I feel good just to be out of the hospital," Cary told the Gloucester (Mass.) Daily Times on April 12.
