Q: Where did the tradition of dousing the winning coach with a Gatorade bath start?

—David Dickey, Dallas

A: Both the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears poured Gatorade on their coaches' heads during the 1984 season, according to a 2015 ESPN.com article.

A YouTube video shows Giants defensive tackle Jim Burt dumping Gatorade on coach Bill Parcells’ head in an October victory over the Washington Redskins.

Weeks later, Bears defensive linemen Steve McMichael and Dan Hampton poured Gatorade on coach Mike Ditka’s head.

“I actually had to grab his shoulders and hold him, and Dan came up from behind and doused him. That’s when the Gatorade baths started. Hampton and I invented it, but we only did it once,” McMichael wrote in his 2004 book, “Steve McMichael’s Tales from the Chicago Bears Sideline.”

Burt also showered Parcells after a win in 1985, and then the Gatorade dunk became a Giants ritual in 1986, wrote Darren Rovell in “First in Thirst: How Gatorade Turned The Science of Sweat Into A Cultural Phenomenon,” which was excerpted on ESPN.com.
