The Hub, an extended-stay hotel used for student housing at the Art Institute of Atlanta, faces multiple violations after an annual inspection by Sandy Springs officials, according to a news release from the city.
Fire Rescue and Code Enforcement officials conducted an initial investigation of the hotel, located on Barfield Road, on May 9. They gave property management until July 25 to make the needed corrections. That return inspection was delayed, however.
On July 24, there was a shooting on the property, where investigators believe a dispute between two Art Institute students led one to shoot the other. Takeenan Williams, 23, died after being shot multiple times.
Police are still searching for the suspect in that case, Patricko Mondrez Davis.
As a result of the police investigation, the follow up inspection was conducted on Wednesday. Numerous violations were found throughout the complex, according to the release.
Fire violations included not working or missing smoke detectors, out-of-date fire extinguishers, unsealed fireplaces, no paperwork indicating fire hydrant inspection and a locked, dead-bolted exit door from the lobby.
In addition, Code Enforcement also gave violations for accumulated trash, three broken-down vehicles with expired tags on site, illicit discharge of paint into the storm drain, lack of maintenance on the storm drains, which had trash and stagnant water present, loose handrails, and an unauthorized dilapidated fence.
A court date of Aug. 15 has been set in Sandy Springs Municipal Court to address the charges.
