Cobb County police discovered a man dead of an apparent gunshot wound Tuesday when they went to a home near Marietta to conduct a welfare check.

The Cobb 911 center received a call from the Tennessee Highway Patrol Tuesday, requesting the welfare check at a house on Old Concord Road, Cobb police spokesman Mike Bowman said.

When officers entered the home, they found Samuel Collins, 60, of Marietta, dead.

Bowman said the Tennessee Highway Patrol took Frank Bowles, 58, of Marietta, into custody.

Cobb authorities have charged Bowles with murder, and he is being held in Cumberland County, Tenn., awaiting extradition back to Georgia.

Police have not said what led to the slaying.
