Clarke County survived a night of continued freezing rain and icy buildup, but as the streets began to thaw with a sunny morning and temperatures hovering above 32 degrees, Athens-Clarke County police still suggested that residents stay off the roads one more day.

“Tonight will be below freezing again and we will have ice,” said Hilda Sorrow, a Clarke County police spokeswoman. “We’re still asking people to stay at home and stay off the roadways.”

Despite reports of as much as half-an-inch of ice accumulating overnight, there were no major accidents or reported injuries. Power outages were minimal. For people who did lose power, the East Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross was managing a temporary shelter at Clarke Central High School.

Main roads were in manageable conditions, Sorrow said, while side streets were still slippery.
