The first weekend of the year is the last hurrah for many before it’s back to reality. But it’s going to be a soggy one in metro Atlanta with thunderstorms possible, according to forecasters.

Friday’s showers will linger Saturday and Sunday, the day when many will return home from holiday travels. There is a 70 percent chance of rain Saturday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“A lot of your Saturday it’s going to be cool, it’s going to be cloudy, but eventually a warm front lifts through and that will push temperatures to mid or upper 50s,” Monahan said.

Sunday’s temperature is expected to reach 60 degrees, but will again be rainy. Thunderstorms are possible, Monahan said.

The rain could halt some highway construction, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. But if the weather permits, bridge repairs on I-20 westbound between McDaniel and Langhorn streets will require lane closures.

Even if the rain cancels roadwork, expect higher traffic volumes Sunday — the unofficial end to the holiday travel season.

At least 20,000 college students are expected to attend this weekend’s Passion 2015 faith-based conference, which hosts events at Philips Arena and the Georgia World Congress Center.

The rain will clear as many return to work and school next week, Monahan said. Monday’s high temperature will reach the lower 50s, he said.
