Two brothers from Virginia led officers and sheriff’s deputies in Rockdale County on a high-speed chase early Saturday morning before crashing, killing one of the men, officials said.
The second brother, 23-year-old Lyndell Taylor, was injured in the crash and arrested, according to a statement from the Conyers Police Department.
The chase started after a license plate reader alerted Conyers officers to a stolen 2018 Toyota Corolla near the Walmart on Dogwood Drive just after 4 a.m. Saturday, the statement said.
Officers attempted to trap the car in the store parking lot, but it maneuvered around the cop cars and onto the street. Police said the car was being driven by Lyndell Taylor’s younger brother, 19-year-old Demetris Taylor.
The Corolla careened down Dogwood Drive at speeds faster than 100 mph, according to police. Officers and Rockdale County sheriff’s deputies attempted to follow the car, but backed off of the chase due to unsafe conditions and in accordance with police policy.
Demetris Taylor turned off the car’s lights during the drive, and lost control on a curve about a mile and a half from where the chase started, hitting a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while Lyndell Taylor was taken to WellStar Atlanta Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.
Lyndell Taylor was later booked into the Rockdale County jail on drug and gun charges, since he was allegedly found in possession of marijuana and a handgun. He was also wanted out of Virginia for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender, police said.
