Positive school change begins in homes

Congratulations to Forsyth and Gwinnett counties for finding ways to feed and clothe students in need (“Schools’ centers aid students in poverty,” News, Oct. 2). No amount of new curricula, books and programs will be successful if students are hungry.

Many, many years ago as a special education teacher in the inner city of Syracuse, N.Y., we were required to make home visits to work with our student families. Many never came to school meetings or functions. It was an invaluable tool for creating the best programs for our students. Many hugs go to Melanie Mitchell and Benita Grant for their visits to apartment complexes to see how they can help student families.

I have always believed that a positive school change begins in the homes. Thanks to all administrators, students, and volunteers involved with these programs.

GOP needs to denounce Trump as president

The horrific tape of Donald Trump bragging about feeling free to grope women because he’s a “star” cannot be merely dismissed as shocking, but should be the final straw in his history of utter disrespect of women. Unlike his statement that the beyond-crude remarks on the tape don’t represent who he is, we have come to learn the opposite is true, in too many disgraceful statements of utter dismissal of women as eye candy and sex objects.

Instead of the usual torrent of remarks of outrage, followed by no meaningful action, this time the Republican party needs to swallow pride and party politics and actually do the right thing by half the population of this country: State that they cannot support this man for president.

We like to encourage kids that they can grow up to be president. How could girls foster that dream with the Republican party sponsoring a man who brags that he is free to sexually assault women?

Braves need to address real problems

Earlier this year, Braves management used Bobby Cox as their scapegoat for a lousy team. Today they are using Roger McDowell. They just can’t seem to get it right. Coppolella and Hart are the problem. They keep trading for sows ears and hope good coaches will turn them into silk purses. Never has worked. They say they are rebuilding. They have been rebuilding for the past 20 years! The Braves owners need to wake up and address the real problem or continue to be mired near the bottom of the league.

Vote for Hillary is vote for less prosperity

The strength of the United States is derived from a vibrant, free-market, capitalist economy in a stable country that conforms to the rule of law. The economy (think jobs) supports our standard of living, military might, and infrastructure. The United States has four percent of the world’s population, but 25 percent of of its economic activity.

The electoral choice in November is between Hillary Clinton — who wants to raise taxes on business, increase regulation, and further pursue the failed economic policies of the Obama administration that have strangled our economy, holding it below 2 percent growth for his two terms. Or Donald Trump, poorly spoken, but right on the critical issues of lowering taxes and reducing regulations, and growing our economy and jobs, which are the lifeblood of our nation’s prosperity. Don’t be distracted by the political noise and name-calling. A vote for Hillary’s progressive agenda will result in a diminished economy, fewer jobs, less prosperity and a continuing diminution of our nation.

The rich will prosper, as they always do — the middle class and poor will suffer the consequences of a poorly performing economy. Choose wisely.
