Trump has moved GOP to ‘hope and change’

This past Sunday, I listened to several of the Sunday morning talk shows.

Bob Corker, Republican Senator from Tennessee and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he hoped that Donald Trump would change his style and attitude toward our allies if he became president.

Mitch McConnell, Republican Majority leader of the Senate, said he hoped that Trump would change his attitude on Latinos.

Paul Ryan, Republican speaker of the House, said he hoped that Trump would change his attitude toward the Mexican American Judge born in Indiana who is hearing the Trump University case. Suddenly, it dawned on me that “The Donald” has moved the Republican leadership to “Hope and Change.” I can hardly wait for the campaign season to shift into high gear.

Ali photo a reflection of society

Yes, I admired and respected Muhammad Ali and mourn his passing. That said, even today, as in 1965 when I first saw that iconic photo of him standing larger-than-life tauntingly triumphant over a vanquished and prostrate Sonny Liston, I experience a frisson of sadness for, and disappointment in, the human race. We — a putatively divine creation of the highest intellect — are, to my knowledge, the only ones of all God’s creatures to derive pleasure from spectating the purposeful and deliberate violence done by, and to, our own species, manifested in such “entertainment” as boxing, extreme fighting, and violence-infused TV and movies. While that evocative photo masterfully captures a moment of mano-a—mano victory, it is no less an unflattering commentary on us, our society, and our values.
