Two-term Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s time in office is at an end.
His tenure spanned a noteworthy period for this state, and nation. He came to office during the Great Recession that had battered the economy and state budget. Deal had to make many tough choices as he deeply cut state spending to balance outflow with inflow.
Deal governed more as a workhorse than a showhorse. Without fanfare, he gained results, making notable policy changes in many areas, while enduring setbacks and missteps at times. This Editorial Board both agreed and disagreed with him at points.
Many would concur, though, that Georgia is largely stronger now than when he moved into the Governor’s mansion. His landmark criminal justice reform is transforming lives and influencing public safety for the better. State support for transportation is greatly increased, and transit has been embraced as never before. Schools are again fully funded.
All told, Deal managed to be both conservative, and yet pragmatic in his outreach to Democrats on common issues. His low-key style yielded results, and not emotional applause points.
And in the end, results are what counts.
