It’s neither an exaggeration nor wishful thinking to say that much of a community’s future is in the hands of its talented young people.

At minimum, the inexorable passage of time ensures they will eventually inherit the earth. In the interim, youthful go-getters will — and should — step into place alongside established leaders.

This transition of responsibility over time is especially important for a still-growing metro like Atlanta, we believe. This region’s success today and in the future will depend on how accurately we assess coming trends and move assertively to address them. That can’t happen if young ideas aren’t part of the mix.

All of which makes intriguing the work of the Young Gamechangers program overseen by GeorgiaForward. For several years now, the nonprofit, nonpartisan group has sought out promising young talent and worked to focus their creativity and energy toward challenges around the state. That’s a fitting goal for an entity that seeks to improve all of Georgia by recognizing common issues and working from the grassroots up to find possible solutions.

There’s great potential in such brainstorming, we believe. This year’s Young Gamechangers class has been working on possibilities for Douglasville and Douglas County. Among their goals are finding ways to enhance educational opportunities for Douglas County students, better defining the county’s role in the broader region and making better use of the area’s assets and history.

The Young Gamechangers will make their formal presentations next Friday in Douglasville. The event is open to the public and RSVP's can be made here: http://bit.ly/1VCc7ln .

Today, we present a selection of thinking from this year’s class.
