The grandson of a man whose Great Depression-era diary was found on the side of a St. Cloud road has come forward to claim the diary.
Bruce Hyer, of Georgia, called WFTV Sunday to say he saw the story of the diary and another family member called him to tell him it was found.
Robert Prather, the city worker who found the diary, said Hyer planned to drive to St. Cloud this weekend to pick it up.
Hyer said he had no idea how the priceless diary ended up in St. Cloud.
Prather found the 1931 diary last week. It dates back to the beginning of the Great Depression and documents the author’s life in detail, including the death of his mother, interactions with his children and how he managed to save $100 in his bank account.
Prather posted about the diary on social media, in hopes of finding who it belonged to.
A Facebook user discovered the author was Oral “Buck” Hyer, who was born in 1907 and died in 1963.
