With a cake nearby, a birthday party for a 2-year-old in Tennessee turned tragic Thursday night as several people were shot, with at least one woman dead, police said.
The ages of the victims at the party in Dyersburg range from 6 to 32, police said.
The victims were on the front porch when the shots were fired, according to police, who said they were looking for three shooters.
Stephanie Childress said was sitting down, waiting to cook dinner when she heard two shots. Childress, who lives four houses from the scene, was one of the first on the scene.
“Innocent kids got hurt for no reason and I am scared to death that they haven't caught anyone,” she aid.
"As a mom, you want to help," Childress said. "You don't want to see anyone else's kids get hurt, and just, I felt I could do more, and it hurts that couldn't do more," she said.
Childress said this area isn't used to tragic events like this.
"My son walks up these streets. It's very unnerving," she said.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation. Dyersburg Police anounced Friday that a suspect in the case, Torius Russell, 29, has been arrested.
According to the Dyersburg Mayor John Holden, two of the victims were air-lifted to Regional One in Memphis.
