At least one person has died in a commuter train accident in Washington, D.C., according to CNN, its affiliate WJLA-TV and The Associated Press.

CNN and WJLA-TV report at least nine others injured.

The trains collided on the Metro Red Line between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations, according to the WJLA -TV report. It happened close to the Fort Totten station, a Metro spokesperson told the station.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter told WJLA that one train was on top of the other train.

This is "developing into a mass casualty event," Etter said. "We're expecting a number of injuries."
