The city of Milton’s first police chief has resigned, effective Thursday. Deborah Harrell is headed for a corporate job involving asset protection, said a city spokesman, who declined to be more specifc.

A police officer since 1994, Harrell signed on heading Milton police operations February 2007 under then-public safety chief Chris Lagerbloom, tasked with helping inaugurate the department. She became police chief outright in 2009. She’s credited with gaining the department state certification and with instituting various outreach programs.

An interim chief will be named late this week and a national search will begin for a replacement, said city spokesman Jason Wright. He said no timeline had been set for a permanent hire.

The Milton City Council passed a proclamation recognizing Harrell’s years of service Monday night.
