HELP WANTED: Top performer only for a dynamic and highly visible position. Powerful communication skills required. Knowledge of iambic pentameter a plus. Financially unmotivated candidates only. Must be Georgia resident for five consecutive years and have publishing experience. Territory: all of Georgia. Apply by Oct. 31.
OK, perhaps we've taken a little poetic license with the personnel listing above, but it's not every day that the state of Georgia solicits candidates to fill the prestigious (if unpaid) job of state poet laureate.
David Bottoms, the Georgia State University professor who has served since 2000, is stepping down, and the Georgia Council for the Arts along with the Georgia Humanities Council is seeking three top candidates from which Gov. Nathan Deal will select a replacement.
"The poet laureate will build awareness for Georgia's dynamic literary heritage, inspire appreciation for the art of poetry and increase recognition and support for contemporary poets in our state," GCA Director Karen Paty said.
