The Woodstock City Council has approved closing a section of Wall Street downtown for up to four months to allow the renovation of a small commercial building.

The Johnston Building, owned by the family of that name, is to be dismantled, possibly demolished, and replaced with a larger structure, according to a staff report. The 4,000-square-foot, single-story building at 8634 Main St. previously housed the LKT Sports store and Downtown Development Authority offices.

Heavy equipment will be operating in close quarters, and for the safety of the public, Wall Street directly behind the building will be closed and fenced off. The closure would begin no earlier than March 4 and end no later than June 29, unless the council grants an extension.

The applicant must install detour signage, keep sidewalks open and clear or, if construction affects the sidewalk, install lighted pedestrian barriers that meet ADA standards. Before it reopens, the street and adjacent landscaping must be returned to its prior condition, and any needed asphalt repairs, made.
