The boardwalk and fishing pier in the lake at Dupree Park in Woodstock are officially open, and city officials have the results of a consultant's study to determine what they might do to enhance recreational fishing at the lake.

Staff of the Woodstock Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments recently completed the improvements at the park, 513 Neese Road, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held July 17.

Officials now are going over an “electrofishing” audit of the 1.5-acre lake by Aquatic Environmental Services. Fish in an area to be sampled were momentarily stunned by electricity, counted when they floated to the surface, and released back into the lake unharmed.

The audit found that the lake has more "predator" fish – largemouth bass and black crappie – than the "forage" fish they feed on, like bluegill; so, stocking of additional forage fish as well as improving the fish habitat and implementing a supplemental fish feeding program might be desirable. Dupree Park also has a playground, restrooms, four tennis courts, two basketball courts, 1/3-mile fitness trail, a nine-hole disk golf course, and two park pavilions.
