The Woodstock City Council will consider an ordinance Feb. 22 allowing patrons of downtown restaurants with alcohol licenses to get drinks “to-go” within a specified entertainment district.
Economic Development Director Brian Stockton outlined the plan for the council Monday night, saying a number of surrounding cities and shopping districts already have similar measures. To-go drinks would be limited to 16 ounces in clear plastic cups. Stockton emphasized the plan would not override existing laws on DUI and public drunkenness, that merchants wouldn’t be allowed to sell booze from separate sidewalk bars and that the Park at City Center would be off-limits.
Councilman Bud Leonard said he was concerned that people carrying open containers would drive away families with children, but Mayor Donnie Henriques said he’s gotten good feedback on the idea. If approved, the measure could be in place by March 15.
