William Johnson has been appointed commissioner of the department of public works, the city of Atlanta has announced.

Johnson has served as the department’s interim commissioner since the departure of Richard Mendoza, who took a job with the City of Austin, Texas, as director of public works.

Johnson, who joined the Mayor Kasim Reed’s administration as deputy chief operating officer this past May, was recently confirmed unanimously by the city utilities committee. He brings more than 20 years of experience in infrastructure management and emergency response to the job.

Johnson previously served as the director of the department of transportation for the City of Baltimore. He managed engineering and permitting services for the city and its snow and weather emergency operations. Johnson’s experience includes serving as prime contractor to the Florida department of transportation.

Johnson holds a master’s degree in geological engineering from the University of Missouri and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Mississippi.
