Canton has hired Oma Lou Stewart away from a neighboring Cherokee County city to be its new city clerk. Stewart will leave Waleska, where she has been city clerk/city manager since December 2015.
The Canton City Council approved Stewart’s hiring July 20. She joins the city Aug. 9 and will earn an annual salary of $60,000, Canton City Manager Billy Peppers said.
Before going to work for Waleska, Stewart served more than 25 years with Dahlonega, where she was an assistant city manager and city clerk.
Stewart succeeds Susan C. Stanton, who was terminated as Canton city clerk April 25.
According to Canton's website, the clerk is responsible for keeping an accurate record and minutes of all meetings of the City Council; maintaining contracts, ordinances, resolutions and agreements, and oversight of the adoption and publication of city ordinances.
