The City of Atlanta will conduct its Homeless Point-in-Time Count on Thursday but still needs 400 more volunteers.
The homeless count is crucial for meeting federal requirements to continue receiving over $10 million for homeless services, and for tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness in Atlanta.
The PIT Count gives the city and its partner agencies demographic information on the homeless population. This census focuses on surveying individuals living in shelters and transitional housing as well as unsheltered homeless who are sleeping in outdoor locations such as sidewalks, parks, encampments and under bridges.
This count will focus on veterans with a goal of ending veteran homelessness by the end of 2015. In addition to Veterans, this count focuses on single women with children, LGBT youth, and other youth who are homeless. These groups make up a significant portion of chronic homelessness, and those who are the most vulnerable to homelessness.
