The heat wave that has left metro Atlantans sweltering in more-than 90-degree temperatures – and parts of south Georgia dealing with readings above 100 degrees – is showing no signs of abating, with unseasonably hot weather forecast through at least the end of next week.

“We’re dealing with an unusual stretch of summer-like heat,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

“On average, we have 90-plus-degree temperatures just over one time – 1.3 days – in the month of May,” Nitz said. “This May, we hit 90 six times, and 89 three other times.”

So far this month, afternoon highs have climbed into the mid-90s each day, with no real relief in sight.

“I expect highs will be above 90 for the next seven to 10 days, perhaps a little longer,” Nitz said.

“However, the summer climate outlook for June-August calls for the temperatures to be near normal,” he said. “So, the hot spring doesn’t mean we’re in for an extra-hot summer.”

But for now, get ready to swelter some more. Highs through the weekend will remain in the mid-90s, with lows in the low to mid-70s and scant hope for any cooling rain.
