To celebrate the opening of a new the Gathering Place Community Center, Union City invited the public to an event on Jan. 19.

The event began with a commemorative walk in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from the Ronald Bridges Park at 5285 Lakeside Drive to the new community center at 6280 Bryant Street. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, there were group tours and activities.

“The City Council and I are thrilled to see the center open its doors. Citizens will have an opportunity to engage in new and exciting programs right here in Union City. As we continue to invest in our plan to strengthen and connect our community, we are putting the city in reach of our children, seniors, and families,” said Mayor Vince Williams.

Located the UC Eagles ballfields, the center was previously home to the Union City Elementary School. In continuance of that spirit, the 25,000-square-foot facility will host new cultural programs including performing arts, business acceleration, exercise, improved indoor recreation and more.

“It’s about more than walls and paint. It’s about people. And nothing is more critical than providing a gathering place for community connection. We are proud to deliver this amenity to our residents and the region,” Mayor Williams added.

Union City’s Parks & Recreation Department is led by Director Lee Blitch and will be charged with managing the facility. The center contains an indoor gymnasium, a state of the art performance theater, courtyard, a dining hall, and several multipurpose rooms.
