If you are winging it Saturday afternoon and don’t have plans, there’s something pretty neat going on at a Cobb County library.

Giff Beaton, once refereed to as the "superstar" of birding in Georgia, will be giving an hourlong presentation on "The Mysteries of Bird Migration" at East Cobb Library.

"Learn in depth about the amazing feats of endurance and navigation many bird species perform twice a year," according to the event posting.

Beaton's expertise is often called upon by Charles Seabrook in the AJC column, Wild Georgia. He also wrote a book in 2004 titled "Birds of Kennesaw Mountain."

“Among us legions of nature lovers, Giff Beaton is a superstar. He has been called Georgia’s Dean of Birding because of his unsurpassed knowledge,” Seabrook said, according to the posting.

Beaton, who is also a Delta pilot will show images and maps to give "an enhanced appreciation for the hazards and the impressive physical challenges migrating birds face and surmount each spring and fall."

The free event at the library, 4880 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta, starts at 4 p.m. and is meant for birding experts or those looking to get their beak wet.
