Q: New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter got his 3,000th hit. What is the record for most hits in a career?
—Anne Bledsoe, Woodstock
A:Pete Rose finished with 4,256 career hits, Ty Cobb is second with either 4,191 or 4,189 – the number is disputed – and Hank Aaron is third with 3,771. Jeter became the 28th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 3,000-hit milestone, and he is the only active player with at least 3,000 hits.
Q: When a scratch-off game advertises that there are six high-value prizes (over $1 million, let’s say), does the Lottery distribute those winning-tickets-to-be randomly, or are there attempts to spread the winners geographically across the state? For example, might all $1 million prizes randomly be sold in Atlanta?
—Wayne Forester, Vinings
A: There are multiple top prize winning tickets, as well as multiple prize levels, available in all Georgia Lottery instant games, Georgia Lottery Corp. spokeswoman Tandi Reddick told Q&A on the News. "Game symbols and prize amounts are distributed randomly during the printing process of instant tickets, and no one knows, until the customer scratches, where winning tickets are," she wrote in an e-mail. "Additionally, tickets are randomly distributed to more than 8,000 retailers throughout Georgia. As a consequence, Georgia Lottery winners come from all parts of the state of Georgia."
