A. The University System of Georgia has two classifications of colleges: two-year colleges, which are authorized to offer up to an associate degree; and state colleges, which are authorized to offer bachelor’s degrees that are targeted to the economic development needs of the local area. Officials told Q&A on the News that within the university system, the name “university” is used for an institution that is authorized to offer graduate degrees in addition to a broad array of bachelor’s degrees.

Q. What is the name of the book showing all the Civil War plaques in Georgia? -- Judy Roberson, McDonough

A. The book “Crossroads of Conflict: A Guide to Civil War Sites in Georgia,” produced by the Georgia Civil War Commission, gives details, photos and information about 350 historic sites. State officials told Q&A on the News that they were not aware of a book showing the markers, but the most comprehensive online listing of all the state’s historical markers is maintained by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. The list can be accessed at georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu/gahistmarkers/gamarkerscontents.htm. The Georgia Historical Society also has a map of state historical markers at map.georgiahistory.com.
