Q: Last year, it was in the news that there were some people who owed thousands of dollars in Ga. 400 tolls. Was the money ever collected?
-- Beverly Kashdan, Sandy Springs
A: State Road and Tollway Authority officials told Q&A on the News that there were hundreds of violators since 2007 and it would take weeks or months to calculate what has been paid by individual violators and to determine a total amount. "However, we did see a substantial decrease in violations in the cash lanes after we began to fully enforce $25 violations in the cash lanes and offered the discount for outstanding violation notices," SRTA spokeswoman Malika Reed Wilkins told Q&A on the News in an email. The SRTA in summer 2010 offered $10 off the $25 penalty for violations between Jan. 1, 2007, and June 30, 2010. She said that as a part of the violations process, unpaid violation notices are referred to a collection agency if they are not paid within the specified time frame. In addition, the Office of the Georgia Attorney General will pursue collections at the Office of State Administrative Hearings, depending on the number of violations and other factors.
