Q: My 10-year-old child was killed in a car accident and I was wondering where you buy the white crosses to put on the roadside?

—Barbara Turner, Newnan

A: Aluminum roadside memorial markers can be bought from the Georgia Department of Transportation for $100. They are 15 inches round with black letters on a white background and will be displayed for one year. They can be ordered by printing a request form from www.dot.state.ga.us/doingbusiness/PoliciesManuals/pap/Documents/Policies/6160-9a.pdf and sending the completed form, an accident report and payment in the form of a check or money order to GDOT State Maintenance Engineer, One Georgia Center, 600 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30308. Requests can be from next of kin or friends, with the approval of the next of kin, according to the DOT's website. Markers are placed at the edge of mowing limits and are not allowed in work zones.

Q: Will those of us who live in DeKalb and Fulton counties be exempt from this one-cent sales tax since we have been subsidizing MARTA for the past 20-plus years? It seems unfair that those of us who already pay an extra tax for MARTA would then be doubly taxed by this new sales tax.

—Carole Awalt, Chamblee

A: Voters in 10 metro Atlanta counties, including Fulton and DeKalb, will vote on the 1 percent sales tax for transportation on July 31. If approved, the residents in those counties will fund a list of transportation projects specific to the area.
