A teenage suspect was arrested Tuesday night after a manhunt in Canton, police said.

The search began when officers were dispatched to the Laurels of Greenwood apartment complex around 4:15 p.m. after reports of a man brandishing a gun near the tree line, Canton police spokesman Pacer Cordry said. When they arrived, the suspect ran into the woods.

Authorities also received information that the suspect was held up inside a home in the Hillcrest subdivision, Cordry said.

Canton police set up a perimeter and searched the surrounding area with the assistance of Cherokee County deputies and K-9 units while waiting for SWAT to arrive.

Area residents were asked to stay inside their homes and keep doors and windows locked.

Damiem Fowler, 17, of Canton was located near a home in the Hillcrest subdivision while Cherokee SWAT was conducting a precautionary search, Cordry said.

A neighbor reportedly held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Fowler was charged with obstruction and transported to the Cherokee Adult Detention Center, Cordry said.
