An 18-year-old high school student facing charges related to marijuana-laced brownies was released from jail on a $6,800 bond Tuesday morning, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said.

James Lawrence, of Marietta, allegedly distributed the drug-tainted brownies on a band trip last month, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Lawrence turned himself in at the Cherokee County Detention Center Monday night. He is charged with five counts each of reckless conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Authorities said Lawrence, a member of the Marietta High School marching band, handed out the brownies during a band competition at Creekview High School in Canton. Investigators said he later admitted that the brownies contained marijuana, the report said.

At least five Marietta students had to be taken to the hospital, including one by ambulance, Channel 2 said. The students were treated and released.

The school is investigating the incident.

"Any time we receive information of drug-related behaviors, on a Marietta City Schools campus or at an off-site event, that potentially violates the student code of conduct, we assess the situation to determine if appropriate disciplinary action should be taken," Marietta City Schools spokesman Thomas Algarin told Channel 2. "Our primary concern is always with the safety and welfare of our students and staff."
