City Schools Decatur opened this week with a K-12 enrollment of 4658, largest in the system’s 112-year history. The figure is 98 percent of what was projected, though Superintendent Phyllis Edwards said she expects steady admissions through the end of August. The increase is about 9 percent more than last year’s enrollment. CSD enrollment has jumped by eight to 12 percent each year since 2009. With nearly every school at capacity, the system has 30 trailers (including 12 at Renfroe Middle and 10 at Decatur High) placed at four schools, most during Edwards’ 13-year tenure.
