A southwest Atlanta middle school was evacuated Thursday morning because of a gas leak in the building’s heating system.
The gas leak was reported just before 9:30 a.m. at the former Parks Middle School on Windsor Street, according to Atlanta police.
The building is currently housing students from Sylvan Middle School, which is being renovated, Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said.
She said Atlanta Gas Light and school operations personnel “confirmed that heating equipment malfunctioned, causing the smell of gas to permeate the building.”
The spokeswoman said the Sylvan students were relocated to Kennedy Middle School on James P. Brawley Drive.
“All students and staff are safe and accounted for and at no time were any students or staff members in danger,” Green said.
She said students would be dismissed Thursday at their regular time.
“Buses will transport bus riders to their regular bus stops,” Green said. “Car riders and walkers will return to Sylvan Middle School for dismissal.”
Classes will be held as normal Friday, Channel 2 Action News reported.
