Fulton County police discovered about 20 dogs chained to a tree Wednesday afternoon and suspect they may have discovered a fighting operation, according to spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester.

An officer on patrol first noticed a horse running free in the 5200 block of Koweta Road near Fairburn, Lester told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

When the officer approached a house at the location, he spotted several dogs that appeared to be malnourished and heard more dogs barking in some woods. That is where the officer found several dogs chained to trees.

Lester said those dogs also appeared to be under-nourished and some had scars suggesting they had been used for fighting. Some of the dogs were a pit bull mix but not all of them, she said.

Animal control officers and representatives from the Humane Society took the dogs, along with four hogs and two horses.

Police were trying to find the property owner Wednesday night.
