Work is underway to upgrade a heavily-traveled stretch of road in South Forsyth County. Crews have begun moving dirt to widen a 1.89 mile stretch of Union Hill Road from two to four lanes between McFarland Parkway and Ga. 400. The project also includes a 20-foot-wide grassy median, five-foot sidewalks and design and reconstruction of a bridge on Ga. 400.

Design and right-of-way acquisition for the road was funded by SPLOST funds, while the actual widening is being paid for under the Transportation Bond approved by county voters in 2014.

Commissioners voted 4-0-1 (with commissioner Brian Tam absent) in late June to award the project to C.W. Matthews Construction Company for approximately $19.7 million. Commissioners also decided to allocate $6 million of the $18 million in savings from the Ga. 400 widening project to the work, along with a $1.2 million state grant.
