Candidates interested in running for Smyrna mayor or one of all seven City Council posts may qualify for the Nov. 5 general election in mid-August.

Hours will be 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Aug. 20, 21 and 22 in the Human Resources Room, Smyrna City Hall, 2800 King St., Smyrna.

The qualifying fee for mayor is $756 and for each of the seven Council members is $567 and must be payable by cash, check or money order to the City of Smyrna.

Qualifications for a candidate:

  • A person must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must meet the requirements of a qualified voter of the city of Smyrna, as prescribed by state law.
  • Must have been a Smyrna resident for at least one year before the date he/she offers as a candidate.
  • If elected, must continue to reside in Smyrna throughout his/her term of office in the ward elected.
  • No conviction of any crime involving moral turpitude.

After serving the city for 33 years, Mayor Max Bacon announced during his recent State of the City address that he will not seek another term.

Before he was mayor, Bacon was a Smyrna City Council member for six years.

Current Council members are Ward 1 and Mayor Pro Tem Derek Norton, Ward 2 Andrea Blustein, Ward 3 Maryline Blackburn, Ward 4 Charles Welch, Ward 5 Susan Wilkinson, Ward 6 Tim Gould and Ward 7 Ron Fennel.

Only city residents, who are registered to vote with the State of Georgia at sos.ga.gov/elections, are eligible to vote in city elections.
