Responding to the growing popularity of locally produced alcoholic beverages, the Sandy Springs City Council recently updated its zoning code with text amendments allowing micro-breweries, micro-distilleries and farm wineries in the city.

The Community Development Department has had inquiries on the subject because of the rising popularity of brewpubs and recent state legislation allowing tours and tastings, according to a memo to the Council by City Attorney Wendell K. Willard.

The zoning text amendments allow breweries, distilleries and wineries with an approved use permit in any manufacturing district, city officials said. Moreover, micro-facilities less than 20,000 square feet in size will be able to locate in commercial zoning districts.

Guided tours and “free tastings” are allowed in accordance with state law and Department of Revenue rules and regulations. Brewpubs are recognized as eating establishments where malt beverages are manufactured or brewed.
