The Sandy Springs City Council has approved an intergovernmental agreement with the city of Atlanta on repairing the Lake Forrest Dam. Officials said it has several issues impacting structural integrity, and has been classified as a Category 1 dam, meaning a failure would probably lead to loss of human life.
About half of Lake Forrest Drive crossing the top of the dam lies within the city of Atlanta, with the other half in Sandy Springs. The two cities have agreed to share in making improvements or changes to the structure to bring it into compliance with the Georgia Safe Dams Act.
Sandy Springs spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said the project will first involve draining the lake, which will enable engineers to develop a repair plan to be presented to both cities for approval.
